Gary Rapkin Appointed Superintendent of Schools

The Bonita Unified School District Board of Education has appointed Dr. Gary Rapkin as Bonita Unified’s new Superintendent of Schools effective January 8, 2007.

Dr. Rapkin has held positions of responsibility in a variety of educational settings.   He served as the Superintendent of the Mountain View School District in El Monte for the past eleven and a half years.  Under Dr. Rapkin’s leadership, Mountain View saw improved academic programs for all students, increased staff morale, exceptional relations between the District and bargaining units, and increased parent education and involvement.  In 2002-03, during his tenure with MVSD, Dr. Rapkin was named the 2002-2003 Superintendent of the Year by Region XV of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).
“Dr. Rapkin is a ‘hands-on’ superintendent, who provides extraordinary leadership and actively participates in the planning of the instructional program,” said BUSD Board President Glenn Creiman.  “His strong emphasis on goal setting and improved academic achievement for all students is evident in every part of his work. His skill, talent and passion helped develop the fabric of an outstanding school district in Mountain View.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Rapkin has embraced a range of educational challenges, serving affluent and impoverished school communities.   In his superintendency in Mountain View, Dr. Rapkin championed the success of all students, dedicating the district’s efforts to their academic growth and personal development. “Education’s prime purpose is to help students gain access to their dreams,” Dr. Rapkin said.
Dr. Rapkin is known for his ability to teach and help develop administrative talent. He has served as a university instructor at Azusa Pacific in the administrative program. He also has been in charge of ACSA’s Superintendent’s Academy mentoring fellow Superintendents.  “Dr. Rapkin has an extraordinary ability to connect with people,” said Mr. Creiman.  “He can motivate, guide, challenge, admonish and inspire as he moves his staff and community forward.”.
Prior to his superintendency in Mountain View, Dr. Rapkin’s experience included serving as the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and the Director of Personnel at Glendora Unified School District.  He also served as a secondary school principal in Glendora Unified.  His teaching experience includes high school and middle school as well as adult school and at the university level.
In his new role as BUSD’s Superintendent, Rapkin is looking forward to working with the school board, all staff and parents in a team approach that best serves the needs of the students.
“As Superintendent I hope to involve all facets of the District.  Every employee plays an important role and is part of a team that helps the District be successful,” said Dr. Rapkin.
Dr. Rapkin holds both a teaching and administrative credential and has earned various certificates from the Superintendent’s Academy, School Business Academy and Personnel Institute.  In addition he has received special training in interest-based bargaining, strategic planning, grant writing and multicultural education.
“Dr. Rapkin has a distinguished record of strong professional leadership, financial acumen and a commitment to academic excellence,” said Mr. Creiman. “He has a proven ability to motivate people and develop a climate for positive relations with employees.”
“One of my goals is to continue to enhance the relationship between the Bonita Unified School District and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Rapkin.  “I would like to take every opportunity to build meaningful partnerships with the cities of La Verne and San Dimas, as well as expand our communication with the families that entrust us with their children’s education.”
