A $236,000 grant from The Fletcher Jones Foundation is allowing the University of La Verne’s Natural Science Division to realize its vision of establishing a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility on campus. Combined with previously received private funding, the grant completes the $811,000 needed to fund the NMR facility, which will permit students and faculty alike to conduct research without having to leave campus. It will also allow La Verne to continue collaborative relationships with other universities, including Cal Poly Pomona, Pomona College, UC Riverside and the University of Florida, “We are very grateful to The Fletcher Jones Foundation for partnering with the university to bring our students this crucial technology,” said Robert Neher, ULV Provost and Natural Science Division Chair. “This grant completes funding for the NMR Facility, which will give us a much-needed analytical tool and provide a wide range of new research opportunities in chemistry, biology and physics.” |
This marks the third grant ULV has received from The Fletcher Jones Foundation. In 1997, a $1.5 million grant led to the establishment of the Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair in Biology. In 2002, the foundation provided a $300,000 grant that assisted in the establishment of the Natural Science Division’s Microscopy Center. Establishment of the NMR facility is part of the university’s efforts to bring research-grade instrumentation to the campus and enhance the university’s Natural Science Division. Such progress aids ULV students as they work closely with university faculty members, and serves to better equip students as they prepare to enter the work force or advance to graduate school. The Fletcher Jones Foundation, based in Los Angeles, primarily supports private, independent colleges and universities in California. The Foundation provides grants to support a range of vital purposes and activities at these institutions, including capital projects, scholarships, fellowships, equipment funds and academic program funds. For nearly 30 years, The Fletcher Jones Foundation has made an enormously successful investment in the quality of higher education, an investment that continues to pay substantial dividends. Founded in 1891, the University of La Verne is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research intensive institution enrolling over 8,200 students, serving the needs of traditional and nontraditional age students at its main campus as well as via regional campus locations across California. |
