Personal Technology

This month’s column is very short, because I want you to get the message.

If you use a computer, you need to have a current, virus protection program, with current virus definitions installed.

You also need an anti-spyware program as well. Microsoft offers a good one for free (at least free right now) at: microsoft.com/spyware.
And, you should install the updates to Windows from Microsoft to keep your computer protected.

Over the past year I have dealt with several people that had relatively new PCs, but they abandoned them because they were riddled with viruses and spyware, causing the machine to slow down, advertisements to pop up, and web browser settings were hijacked. If they had utilized the three protection points above, the computers would be operating normally.

So, here is your computer New Year’s resolution: Get and maintain a good antivirus program, keep the virus definitions updated, use an anti-spyware program, and update windows.

Happy 2006 from my family to yours.
