Antonovich Calls National Guard Deployment Vital Step in Enforcing Border

Los Angeles — Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich expressed his strong support for President George W. Bush’s plan to deploy National Guard troops to help secure the border and curtail the influx of illegal immigrants.

“The President’s plan is an important step forward in the effort to regain control of our borders to protect national security and curb illegal immigration,” said Mayor Antonovich. “The National Guard currently operates successfully at the border performing drug interdiction duties.”

Los Angeles County has nearly 12% of our nation’s illegal aliens, the most of any other county. Illegal immigration has had a devastating economic impact on Los Angeles County.

“While legal immigration is a positive influence on our culture and economy, illegals cost County taxpayers nearly three quarters of a billion dollars annually in public safety, healthcare and public social services. It is also an affront to those who follow the law and are applying to become legal citizens.”
