Second Annual Relay For Life Planned for Bonelli Park

The American Cancer Society’s 24-hour walk, the Relay For Life, is coming to San Dimas once again. This year, the special event will take place on May 20 & 21 at Bonelli Park’s Picnic Valley. The event begins at 9 a.m. on May 20 with a special ceremony honoring local cancer survivors. Throughout the day, walkers and guests can participate in educational activities aimed at raising cancer awareness; enjoy live entertainment, and walk laps in support of the American Cancer Society. At 9 p.m. on May 20, a special dedication ceremony for those who have experienced cancer will take place. During this program, luminaria bags with names of cancer patients will be illuminated around the track.

Unquestionably, what makes the Relay For Life event unique is the participants. For a second year, teams of people – from school groups, businesses, churches and families – will camp out and take turns walking for 24 hours to symbolize the ongoing struggles of cancer patients. At the same time, walkers will raise awareness and important funds for research and patient services.

Last year, the event raised over $9000, and recognized 15 cancer survivors. This year, we’re hoping to exceed those numbers with your help! Volunteers, walkers and survivors are still needed to make this Relay For Life an even bigger success. If you are a cancer survivor, or you are interested in volunteering at this event, or would like to walk for a cure, please contact the American Cancer Society at (626) 966-9994, Option 3.
